What do you use to make the base for the house white?

I've seen a lot pictures on the website that show a white base beneath the house. Is it just aluminum foil covered in fondant or is it a cake board? They all look great. Any tips would be wonderful! Thanks.

For the base of my gingerbread house i use foam core board, and then I "paint" it with white royal icing to look like snow.
