how to store gingerbread houses
by: Anonymous

My grandson and I made a gb house from a kit in '10 - it's now Dec '16 and I still have it, and bring it out. I wrap it in bubble wrap, put it in a plastic container, then place it on a shelf in the guest room. A few of the candies have fallen off but it still looks pretty good. However, this year there is a strong moldy smell, which is why I came on here - to seek help for this problem. To no avail. I wish I had sprayed it with some kind of lacquer originally. I really do not want to toss it, for sentimental reasons.

saving the g house

I never save my gingerbread house because they are for children and the most fun they get is from tearing into it like hansel and gretal. I did try once to freeze one. Found that the icing cracked and fell off. The only solution I have heard of that works is to shellac it - give it a good coat of shellac and don't leave any place for bugs etc to bore into it.
