crushed sweet windows seeping and then disappearing

by Karen Paige
(UK)

Hi,
My daughter made a wonderful gingerbread house this year. She used crushed boiled sweets for the windows, but after about 2 days they had started to weep and after a few days they had completely disappeared. Can you tell us how to make sure this doesn't happen next year

Some candies melt more than others
by: Kelly

I read somewhere years ago that butterscotch candies work the best so that's what I always used (until I changed to leaf gelatin windows). The butterscotch never melted or weeped, but I could have just been lucky and had ideal temperatures and/or humidity those years.

Now, I mostly use leaf gelatin for my windows. It's easier than melted candy and the finished product, with its diamond design, is perfect for most house designs (everything but rustic houses). And you can even "paint" the leaf gelatin sheets to make it look like stained glass.

But you asked about melted candies so I'll try to stay on topic ;-)

If anyone has the time, I'd love to hear the results of an experiment with various melted candies used for gingerbread house windows. Maybe melt a bunch of different ones, let them set up, and then hang them vertically for a while and see which last the longest? Any volunteers?

crushed hard candy
by: ginger36912

We used crushed hard candies to make the windows. After baking gingerbread pieces a few minutes, spoon some crushed candy into each window opening and finish baking.
