What's the best base?

by Kelly
(Atlanta, GA)

Does anyone have an opinion on the best material to make a gingerbread house base from? Is wood covered in foil best? Is there anything better that maybe the icing would stick to better or is foil just fine? Anything sturdy but lighter than wood?

Best for Base
by: Richard

Hi Kelly,

When I was making my fairly large 'Harriman House' lodge this was a concern for me because I needed a base of 30" x 18".

I went and cut and glued together 1" thick pieces of dense styrofoam. To add as extra support a simple piece of 1/4" plywood was glued on the bottom to hold everything together.

Foil could be wrapped around the entire base but I iced a "crumb" coat on first, let that harden then added another coat and did my snow with coconut. I shows it pretty well on my picture.

Happy Holidays, Kelly!

Richard
