The Sugar Shack

Our extended family has an annual gingerbread competition. 2009 was the second year of the competition and having missed out on the trophy in 2008, I was determined to win! I set out to build a gingerbread house using the Cabin pattern on your website. I slightly altered the pattern, adding a chimney, windows and a door.

My favourite features were the roof, made out of 'karate belts' (sour straps). Not only did it look great but tasted amazing as well.

My other favourite feature was the chimney with santa sticking out of it, which was done using a santa marshmallow.

One area which was not successful was my attempt to cut out a star window at the top of each peak. I did this prior to cooking and much of the star closed over when cooked. In the end, I don't think that it really mattered either way.

I included a battery operated tea light to flicker through the windows for added effect. I used roll ups in an attempt to tint the light shining through the windows however don't think it was worth the effort in the end.

I had a great time building this house and also great satisfaction in taking home the trophy!!!
