stiff gingerbread pieces?

I have decided to use a different dough recipe this year, that everyone claims is "the best".
But, it is absorbing moisture and getting soft. What do I need to do to add to the dough to alleviate this problem?
The recipe uses molasses, melted shortening, eggs, sugar, spices and flour.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
