Happy 8th Birthday Racing Track

Happy 8th Birthday Racing Track

Hi all that share the love of cake decorating!
Im fairly new 'green' to this field and have only experimented with the past 3 birthday cakes for my boy! I have not had any professional experience but ppl keep telling me cos the standard keeps getting better & better every year! ...that I should seriously think about doing a course or starting a small business!

Now Im doing a small business course with still not real expertise in the decorating cakes field but thinking that THAT is a direction I'd like to head in.

I LOVE sitting & 'playing' with icing & experimenting with what can be done! It blows my mind the endless things that can be achieved with & through this medium!

Im still in awe of every cake out there that I see! And can appreciate the time, efforts, artistry & craftsmanship that goes into this.

I would be grateful for ANY feed back & any helpful hints!

I don't know whether my standard comes up to scratch but I'd like to think I can improve enough to sell something unique if I get more experience & really put mind to it! :)

I've only ever made 3 cakes of this type! And there's been a whole year in between each! haha Be gentle!! Hehehe!

Thank you :)
Jo O

P.S.
This is my boys 8th birthday taken March 08! It's a figure 8 racing track complete with faux bridge & go-karts & some of my boys favourite vid game characters.
Naruto on chequered flag, Sonic the Hedgehog in the Ferrarri concept go-kart, Crash Bandicoot in the blue Dodge Viper go-kart & the BIRTHDAY BOY himself in a Pixar 'Cars' Wingo go-kart!

P.P.S. Update
by: Anonymous

P.P.S.
Update:
I didn't complete that business course as my son got very ill that year so as a single mum couldn't dedicate the time to both. Also there was too many headaches with getting food criteria requirements met to starting a foodie business from home; Too much of a headache whilst son was still in Primary school. I still love baking & making crazy cakes.

Happy to announce only 2 weeks ago I've completed that same business course but for another creative pursuit:- Faery Wings and Costume Accessories business, of all things {www.etsy.com/shop/fableworkshop} :)
My boy is now 13! And still wants me to make him a Death Star cake! Have to ponder on the engineering of THAT one for future challenge! LOL Will always make novelty crazy cakes as hobby for ppl. If anyone has any questions you can contact me thru that etsy site or my other email: bakki_boo@hotmail.com

WHOAH WOW Sorry I didnt see this
by: Jo O

Oh WOW NO I only got here going thru old emails with links to old pictures..I never expected this to be here still or that I'd have a response. WOW

I'm flattered & TY Kelly for trying explain...You were very close. From memory I actually cooked 3 round cakes, two for figure 8 as you said I cut smaller circles inside & sculpted the best part a figure eight as I could. I halved the 3rd cake and placed in centre as the over track again sculpting it down to size...So YES I had heaps left over to help with filling in gaps cutting slices to fit the gaps to complete the shape. I did manage to slice in half horizontally so it had jam & cream in middle that was a fun challenge But all the pieces were stuck together with strawberry jam. And yes it looked a MESS when I'd done the basic shape. I didn't think it was gunna work but pushed on.

The next huge task was the grey chocolate fondant rolled out large enough to lay over the whole thing without breaking & be able to cover all the nooks & crannies. That was fun too {I'm totally being sarcastic here! Was sweating the whole time - But I think if you don't try these things you will never know what you are capable of}

Anyway Yes the rest was fondant and cake dye/paint that I'd purchases from specialty cake supplies shop. The figurines were sculpted from fondant using toothpicks to hold together.
Slowly surely it started to take shape. All the fondant extras I'd cut out & painted Stuck on with Cake glue {forgotten the name of the Powder that makes the Glue -CMH powder??} Add lil water makes a gel-like glue also used to harden the fondant Figurines!

It took a few days to do but it is my yearly present to my son so I always go out for his bday The last few years I have reduce the craziness.

I should post up 2009 was a 3 stack Ninja Temple (see photo here). This was the last of the Crazy Over-the-Top cake phase; the following years have been low key. This year he had cupcakes with Mario & Sonic & Naruto faces on them. -Easy less fuss still impressive...

Hope this helps anyway :)

I'll take a stab at this cake's design
by: Kelly

Since Jo O. (the baker behind this beautiful cake) hasn't answered how she made it (it's probably just an old e-mail or something), I'm going to guess at how she did it. Please note that this is a guess! Maybe, together, we can figure out how to emulate this design so feel free to chime in if you have any guesses or if you've tried it yourself:

I'm guessing Jo used 2 round cake pans. Then, she cut out the teardrops (almost circles) out of the middle of each. If those pieces came out intact, she could have re-used them to fill in the space between the 2 cakes to make it appear more like a Figure 8. Adding the raised track is genius! and I'm guessing she did that either with cupcakes or the spare cake parts from the teardrop cutouts.

Icing or, better yet, fondant can really hide a LOT of imperfections on cakes, so I'm assuming this cake looked really pieced together before she started decorating it. What a beautiful job she did with the decorating though! I'm guessing that all of the black, white, and yellow details are made out of fondant (and possibly the main gray of the track as well).

Jo, we'd love to hear from you if you're getting these messages!

All the best,
Kelly

Jo O, we've had so many requests for more info that I've had to remove everyone's e-mail addresses (better for them to not receive spam anyway).

Please share more details here if you're willing. Obviously, LOTS of people are interested!

GO for It!
by: Jennycakes

Your cake is awesome and you should go for it...your cake biz I mean! I just started mine and it is awesome. Even though I don't always think I'm super awesome, people cannot seem to get enough. Check out my website www.jenny-cakes.com for ideas and go for it yourself. I"m so glad I did (I just started in Novemeber), and your cakes are super cool so you should do it too (I'm just glad your in Melbourne and not in Chicago!). Good luck!
