Hard candy not allowing icing to dry

How can I use hard candy in my display (like candy canes) if it and the royal icing react to each other? One won't the other dry & what I'm building falls apart.

I've used royal icing on all kinds of candy for many years and have never had a problem. You might check your royal icing recipe. There may be something missing.
