Cutting windows out of pre-made gingerbread houses?

Hi - we have a hard core gingerbread house competition every year and one of the requirements is that everyone start with the same pre-made gingerbread house. We want to figure out a way to cut windows out of the house and insert glass windows. Has anyone successfully done this without cracking the gingerbread?

Cutting into a pre made gingerbread

I'm assuming but never attempted this myself is to heat a pairing knife for 30secs till the tip is nice and hot and slowly cut the windows out I read this is how you cut a peppermint stick so I can only assume this would work for the gingerbread house too

Assuming we have a backup plan in case this doesn't work (can you start over with a new one?), I've had good luck softening gingerbread temporarily by wrapping it in a damp paper towel and microwaving for a few seconds. Once it's soft, you should be able to cut out windows with a very sharp knife.
