cardboard house

We are cutting back on expenses this year. Has anyone successfully made "gingerbread" houses out of cardboard yet still decorated with all the candies, frosting etc? Wondering if the cardboard will hold the weight of the candy, etc.

Cardboard "Gingerbread" House

I've certainly used cardboard as a support base for gingerbread houses plenty of times. You "glue" the gingerbread pieces onto the cardboard with royal icing and I've never seen the cardboard get soggy (just sort of oil-stained). So I would also say "Go for it".

Please make sure to come back here and tell us how it goes (and share photos)! I've always wondered if I could make a cardboard house look just like a gingerbread house! Just haven't had the time.

Cardboard houses

I made my first cardboard house out of a shoe box and I used royal icing to stick the candy on it. The box did not get soft or soggy....so go for it.

Thank you for your response! I bet you are correct about the frosting making the cardboard soft/gummy. Love your idea of pasting graham crackers to the outside. Thanks!

In the past, we have gone the cardboard route, and "pasted" graham crackers on the frame (sometimes we used the foam board too)..worked nicely, and store brand graham crackers are usually pretty inexpensive. I'm not sure about putting the frosting directly on the cardboard..may get soggy. Hope that helps1
